First group of Apprentices join the London Sports Turf Academy

Capel Manor College, London’s leading land based college, has established the London Sports Turf Academy. This initiative developed from an idea from the grounds staff at the capital’s world-class sports venues and in particular Tottenham Hotspur specifically responding to a growing shortage of highly qualified grounds staff especially in London and the home counties.

This month sees the first group of Apprentices join the London Sports Turf Academy and start their journey toward becoming the world’s leading grounds managers. The Apprentices work for many of the leading sports and amenity employers and attend Capel Manor once per week to study the newly-designed Sports Turf Operative Apprenticeship under the guidance of Martin Stanton, London Sports Turf Academy Manager. When the Apprentices complete their training, they may have the opportunity to join an Elite Sports Turf Academy directly supported by London’s elite sports clubs.

“We see enormous potential in the London Sports Turf Academy”, says Malcolm Goodwin, College Principal. “Grounds management is an internationally important career and can be hugely rewarding and hugely exciting. Working alongside leading sports clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur Football Club and major sporting venues including Twickenham and Wentworth Golf Club, our Academy Apprentices will benefit from the first-hand experience of the very best grounds staff in the UK and access to the finest facilities, equipment and learning resources. This will ensure that the London Sports Turf Academy Apprentices have the finest possible start to their careers.”
